Military funeral honors

DoD’s final honors detail (typically the flag folding, “Taps,” and a two-person detail at minimum). Request through the funeral director, who calls the service coordinator for the veteran’s branch and the state where the funeral will be. Families with cremated remains may call the coordinator directly. Plan at least 48 hours. Eligibility is shown with a DD-214 or other discharge document showing honorable service. Separate from VA burial allowance and national-cemetery interment.

Who it is for. Active-duty deaths; veterans and Selected Reserve with honorable or under-honorable-conditions discharge. Dishonorable and some capital-crime cases are not eligible.

Bring. DD-214 or other discharge document showing honorable service.

Timing. At least 48 hours’ notice is recommended.
