Benefits Delivery at Discharge (pre-discharge claim)
File a disability claim 180 to 90 days before a known separation date. Online filing lets VA pull current-period service treatment records. Include the Separation Health Assessment Part A self-assessment. Be available for VA exams for 45 days after you file. With fewer than 90 days left you can still file, but it is not BDD. Special-handling claims (serious injury, terminal illness, character-of-discharge pending) are not BDD.
Who it is for. Full-time active duty (including qualifying Guard/Reserve/Coast Guard) with a known separation date 180–90 days out.
Bring. SHA Part A self-assessment; STRs if you do not file online.
Timing. BDD window is 180–90 days before discharge. Conditions added after day 90 may wait until after separation.
FortSource maps the official page. No claim filed on anyone’s behalf. Not VA, not DoD, and not legal advice. The issuing agency’s form wins.
