Add or remove dependents (21-686c)
Extra pay for a spouse, child, or dependent parent: disability at a combined 30% or more, and also pension or DIC when those rules apply. File online or mail VA Form 21-686c (VA Form 21-674 if a child 18–23 is in school; VA Form 21P-509 for a dependent parent). Report divorce, death, marriage of a child, or a child leaving school to avoid overpayment. VA also asks you to confirm dependents (VA Form 21-0538); missing that can drop extra pay.
Bring. Marriage or birth records when asked. VA Form 21-674 for school-age children 18–23. VA Form 21P-509 for a dependent parent. VA Form 21-0538 to confirm dependents.
Timing. File within a year of marriage/birth for the earliest effective date. VA says confirm dependents at least every 8 years.
