Transfer Post-9/11 GI Bill to a spouse or child (TEB)

DoD — not VA — approves the transfer. Request TEB in milConnect while still on active duty or in the Selected Reserve. Typical rules: 6 years of service on the approval date, agree to 4 more years, and the dependent must be in DEERS. Purple Heart: no service-time clock, but still request while on active duty. After DoD approves, each adult dependent files VA Form 22-1990E on their own Login.gov / ID.me account — signing in as the sponsor gets the application denied. Spouse housing allowance does not pay while the sponsor is on active duty. A child can start only after the sponsor has 10 years of service, with a high-school diploma or age 18, and under 26. VA last updated this page 1 Sep 2026.

Who it is for. Still serving (active duty or Selected Reserve) to start a new transfer. You cannot start a new TEB after you leave service.

Bring. DEERS enrollment for the dependent; milConnect account; later VA Form 22-1990E for the family member.
